Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic is a natural, hands-on method of healing. The Greek word Chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand" is the origin of the word chiropractic. Chiropractors correct subluxations in the spine. Subluxation is a $10 word that means the vertebra is out of place. Not necessarily dislocated, but it is not quite where it belongs...

A subluxated vertebra does not move quite normally. Have you ever had your arm in a cast? When a joint doesn't move for weeks, it becomes hard to move it. It is stiff and sore. It is the same when joints in the spine become subluxated. Along with the stiffness and pain from a subluxation, much of the nervous system can be affected. Most of the nerves in your body must travel through openings in the spine in order to get to your central nervous system. When the joints of the spine become stiff, sore and swollen from a subluxation, the nervous system is adversely affected. A chiropractor corrects subluxations.

Restorative & Theraputic Massage

Massage therapy is manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments) to enhance a person's health and well-being. There are dozens of types of massage therapy methods (also called modalities).

Growing popularity these days is therapeutic massage, a kind of massage offered with the goal of obtaining a therapeutic benefit. It is different from relaxation massage, which is performed to aid in relaxation. This type of massage is often relaxing, but the end goal of this session is not relaxation. This kind of massage is offered at various spas and massage suites, and many massage schools teach their students therapeutic techniques. The goals of this massage considerably vary between clients and massage therapists. In some cases, massages are performed by a health professional and may be done as part of a larger treatment plan. For instance, someone in physical therapy for an injury might have regular therapeutic massage to improve muscle tone, increase flexibility and loosen muscles. Likewise, it can be used to supplement cancer care, wound care, and many other treatments.

Holistic Health Practices

The term "alternative health care" is not really appropriate. What alternative practitioners do is address the health of the individual and not merely try to manipulate symptoms. They work to improve the health of the patient, enabling the body to heal itself.

Rather than thinking of disease as something that just randomly invades a healthy body, they think of disease as evolving when all of the components for good health are not present. For a body to be healthy there must be good genetics, good structural balance, good nutrition, biorhythmic integrity and good emotional health. When these base components are not present, it sets the stage for disease.

Traditional Western medicine deals with symptoms. It is a great approach when the symptoms are severe or dangerous. If you get hit by a car, you may want the trauma team to work on you rather than have someone give you calcium to help you bones to heal.

Chronic health problems respond well to holistic care. Gastric reflux, for example can be controlled with a drug complete with side effects. The holistic practitioner will look at the problem as the digestive system telling you that something is wrong and try to come up with a therapy that addresses the cause of the problem. The holistic care will not have side effects and it will ultimately help more serious problems from developing.

Sometime both approaches are needed. An asthmatic, for instance, can die if the attack is severe enough. Drugs can save his or her life. At the same time, addressing nutritional and other core health issues can reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. Similarly, cancer patients can usually benefit from both approaches...
